I create illustrations inspired by modes and styles of interior design, horror, and the decorative. My work explores the ways in which imagery and design can be used to manipulate atmosphere and create an affecting experience, and explores the contrast between the contained nature of the body and infinite space suggested by pattern, between expected decorative display and the somewhat taboo nature of the body’s internal workings. I am interested how the repetition of decorative elements can be used to set an emotional tone or mood, as well as the moral and personal implications of dissection and the display of the human body. My work centres around the interplay between these two major themes. I aim to create a sense of cognitive dissonance with my designs, through the aesthetic pleasure of ornament and a unease or disturbance via unusual subject matter.
